“At-Home Care Options Keep Seniors Out of Nursing Homes”

I love headlines like this!

Since Medicare is looking at withholding payments to hospitals for readmissions within 30 days and our national deficit is so high and legislators are looking at how to cut costs to the medical model period, it’s interesting that necessity forces them to look to home care for the answers. Our industry has been trying to tell people for years that at home care is not only preferred by people but is financially desirable.

I always tell clients who want or need the very highest, most expensive services we offer, you can spend that money on a nursing home OR you can spend it on one-on-one care in your own home where, if you want a cup of tea six times a day, they will get it for you….not going to happen in a nursing home. Now, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing cheap about the services we provide because we are privately paid by clients or long term care insurance companies. But as the government looks towards this model, we will see more services provided through state and federal programs that are geared at in-home care, rather than nursing homes.

Please note that I’m in favor of nursing homes, WHEN people really need them but they’ve been utilized way too much unnecessarily over the years. The biggest thing you can do is to be prepared, get educated and know what your options are before you have a need and then be your own advocate when decisions need to be made.
