Lois and Home Instead

I just thought I might introduce myself to some of you who might be reading this. My name is Lois and I started a Home Instead Senior Care franchise over 15 years ago in WA State. I was an ICU RN for 10 years before that, a lab tech before that, served in the US Army, grew up in the Army! I didn’t really choose this job, it chose me! I grew up with a long line of caregivers. My grandmother took care of grandpa for years after he had a stroke. My mother took care of her mother AND her mother-in-law until they both passed in their 90′s! And five years ago, I got the privilege of helping take care of my own mother until she passed.

But ultimately, it’s about caring about others, about knowing that we make a difference every day in the lives of the seniors we care for and for their families. This is a “feel good” job and I couldn’t be more pleased that this is where I am and what I do. This blog is really only ideas about how to age with more ease and dignity. It’s information to help you and your loved ones on this journey we are on together. I’m a baby boomer so I’m looking everyday at what my future is going to look like.

I recently bought a “fixer upper” new house and part of the plan included things like an elevator and a master bathroom where you can wheel me in the shower, hose me down and wheel me out the other side!!! No one at 20 or 30 years old would even think of such things but it’s our reality. We are headed into a tsunami of 85+ year olds and we’re not even prepared as a nation. Again, another reason I love Home Instead, because Paul Hogan, the founder, is a participating member of a global think tank group to address the aging of the world’s population.

But at the end of the day, it’s whether I can brush my own teeth orĀ go to the bathroom by myself. We all have to face aging. It’s how we do it that matters. Enjoy the best, prepare for the worst…and maybe I can give you some helpful ideas along the way. If you actually read this, please send me your comments…Lois
