Mom is Mad at ME!

How would you react if your mother insulted your efforts to try and help her? Just this past weekend I had an exasperated daughter call, looking for help. Her mother fell and had to go to the emergency room. They recommended that she go to a rehab but she was determined to go back to her home. She was fighting mad and took it all out on her daughter.

I know that the daughter has been going over to her mom’s house twice a day, she is doing all of the grocery shopping, picking up medications, taking mom to doctor’s appointments, making her meals, doing her laundry and on and on. Basically, the daughter has become mom’s caregiver.

Currently, there are 43.5 million adults who care for a family member or friend who is over 50 years old. Most of them have never thought of themselves as caregivers.

But I also know that her mother does not realize that she is being taken care of. It’s a common theme in this industry. Mom is surviving just fine but it’s because someone else is taking care of her. But she’s also scared of the future, her body is betraying her, she’s lonely and probably depressed with maybe some memory issues thrown in.

It’s a no win situation. Home Instead Senior Care has a website where Dr. Amy has some great advice if you’ve ever been in this kind of situation.
