Walk Often, Safely

Walking can be a great outdoor activity for seniors.  If you’re outside with an older adult, though, help ensure everyone’s safety.  Here are some suggestions:

  • Always wear comfortable, well-fitting walking shoes or boots, with low heels and firm soles
  • Use a cane for extra balance. Make sure it is adjusted for your height
  • Carry as little as possible
  • Allow plenty of time
  • Look out for all vehicles, including cars, bicycles and motorcycles
  • Watch out for hazards and be on the alert for cracks and curbs
  • Avoid walking at rush hour, after dark, or before a bad weather event
  • Cross the street only at a crosswalk or intersection
